Summer Legal Module 2023 envisions a two-week experience in the heart of Russia, focusing on legal mini-courses taught in English by some of our best faculty. Participants do not sit exams, but do receive a Certificate of Attendance, and we encourage all levels of students, Bachelor’s and Master’s, to attend. The cost of attendance and food expenses is 80 000 Rubles per person. Air travel, visas, housing, excursions and cultural program so on are the responsibility of the student (it is possible to stay in the dormitory of the Presidential Academy on request).

The target audience:
Students of all levels, bachelors and masters, graduate students, young scientists, professors at foreign universities

Concept:
The summer legal module involves a two-week internship within the framework of the Russian Academy of National Economy and Public Administration under the President of the Russian Federation, aimed at in-depth study of topical issues of international and Russian law.

Particular attention will be paid to the study of the principles of the activities of Russian state and municipal bodies, the judiciary, the bar, and notaries; current issues of forced displacement in Russia and the world; issues of human rights protection in business, FinTech and TechFin company.

In addition, during the internship, students will get acquainted with the basics of the Russian language for foreigners, which will be the first step towards understanding and studying the rich Russian culture.

Education is implemented through innovative legal mini courses taught in English.

After completion of the course provided successful completion of all modules, participants will receive a Diploma in further education of the state standard.

Federal Notary Chamber
We are ready to make an exit mini-course on the basics of the Russian notary in the Federal Notary Chamber and the notary’s office of a notary in Moscow. Lectures in English without an interpreter.

 


United Nations Refugee Agency in the Russian Federation
Together with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross, it annually holds summer schools, seminars and conferences on forced displacement issues in the modern world, global migration trends, the refugee rights protection system in Russia and other related topics.
A field trip to the UN House in the Russian Federation. Lectures in English without an interpreter.

PROGRAM OF SUMMER LEGAL MODULE 2023:

1. Russian language for foreigners
Olga Kiyanova

The aim of the course is to teach basic structure and alphabet, common words and phrases, and to master basic reading skills. Your first step towards getting to know the city, studying Russian law.

2. Comparative public administration
Tigran Zanko

The course is aimed at studying various models and approaches to state and municipal government around the world with an emphasis on the study of legal aspects. Through the prism of comparative analysis, students will be able to study the features of public administration in the Russian Federation, deepen their knowledge of the theory of state and law, and management theory.

3. Russian judicial system and process
Alena Zaitseva

This course will introduce you to the most complex and important part of the Russian legal system. As the third branch of government, the judiciary occupies a special place in the Russian system of checks and balances. The course includes a description and a discussion of the most important reforms of the Russian judiciary and procedural codes. You will also learn about the structure of the judiciary and its current problems.

4. Key mechanisms for consideration of commercial disputes in Russia
Valeria Romanova

The aim of the course is consideration of commercial disputes in Russian state courts and arbitration. This course will introduce general provisions in relation to the jurisdiction of the Russian state courts, Options to consider disputes with foreign parties; «Procedural sanctions»; recognition and enforcement of foreign court judgments in Russia. This course will examine general provisions in relation to international arbitration in Russia; recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards and key features of mediation in Russia.

5. Fundamentals of the Russian notary
Federal Notary Chamber

The notary is one of the most important elements of the Russian legal system. Within the framework of this course, current notaries will introduce students to the system of bodies of the Russian notary, their powers and relationships, the main tasks of the notary’s activity in Russia. The current problems of international cooperation in the field of notaries will be also touched upon.

6. The Russian system of advocacy and comparative legal practice
Alexander Eremenko

The course describes a few topics that link the national framework of the Russian legal environment and the global design of legal practice from the point of view of country studies. The course reveals the organizational structure of the legal profession in Russia, paying special attention to the professional competence and ethics of the Russian legal profession and to the constitutional principle of providing qualified legal assistance by lawyers.

7. Business and human rights
Elena Danilenko

This course will introduce the emerging field of Business and Human Rights. This area of law is rapidly developing and gaining momentum worldwide. It is changing how International Law, Corporate Law and other areas view corporations and their place in society. Due to increasing corporate power and technological interconnectedness, as well as environmental and other global challenges, this discipline is increasingly finding resonance in both Business and Law, even being intersectional with diverse disciplines such as the sciences and Ethics. This course will examine the history and context of Business and Human Rights, its present and future, and its potential impact and relevance, including in Russia.

8. FinTech and TechFin company
Irina Antroptseva

The ever-changing financial industry landscape has not always been a snug fit with legacy regulatory schemes. National regulators often struggle to enforce existing regulations or implement new ones onto the evolving business environment in a timely and proper manner, leaving many FinTech companies and financial institutions uncertain about how they may implement innovative technologies in a compliant manner. The lecture will allow you to learn the purpose of regulatory sandboxes and its general characteristics, including certain benefits and shortcomings.

9. Actual Issues of forced displacement in Russia and the world
United Nations Refugee Agency

The visiting course at the UN House in the Russian Federation is devoted to the study of international standards of legal protection of asylum seekers and refugees, the specifics of the procedure for determining refugee status. The participants will get acquainted with the activities of the UNHCR in Russia, as well as the main areas of work of the International Committee of the Red Cross in the field of protecting the rights of refugees and asylum seekers.
